• Winter 2007 Adirondack Public Observatory Program: "The Heavens of Winter", presented at the WILD Center, Tupper Lake, NY. Slideshow presentations in the Flammer Theater followed by guided tours of the night sky (weather permitting) with telescopes, binoculars, and the eye; conducted by members of the Adirondack Public Observatory. All talks begin at 7:00 p.m., and are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, November 28: "Did Rivers Flow on Mars?". Presented by Aileen O'Donoghue. The talk coincides with an opposition of Mars – a very close approach to the Earth – when telescopes can expose its mountains and ice caps. Aileen discusses recent research on Mars, including the current speculation that Mars might have had more water, and water sooner, than the Earth. She discusses the old and discredited belief that Mars was covered with canals. Aileen is Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Saint Lawrence University, author of the recent book "The Sky is Not the Ceiling," and a Trustee of the APO.
Thursday, December 13: "Pregnant Rocks and Mystic Crystals". Presented by Gib Brown. Learn how the heavens above affect the weather down here below, and following along the lines of the first talk in the series, whether Mars might have had weather before the Earth did. Gib is a retired Earth Science teacher from AuSable Valley High school, given an "Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award" by the National Association of Earth Science Teachers, for many years was the Channel 5 and 31 Weatherman from Plattsburgh, and a Trustee of the APO.
Thursday, December 27: "A Star of Bethlehem in Year Zero?". Presented by Jan Wojcik. Computer programs can simulate the look of the night sky over any place on Earth at any time in the past and future. Did a special star appear at a special time and place? What's up there now? Jan Wojcik is Professor of Humanities Emeritus at Clarkson University, author of a book on Luke's Gospel, and a Trustee of the APO.
