Dear Members and Friends,
This year has been one of significant progress for the Adirondack Public Observatory. The hard work of many has resulted in the erection of our first building in Tupper Lake: a Roll-Off Roof Observatory. This has been accomplished entirely by private funds. If you have not yet had a chance to visit the observatory and see this moveable roof in operation please call to set up a private visit.
Over the winter the larger telescopes will be permanently mounted. By summer we will be holding star parties on a regular basis. We plan to expand our programs to include classes for those who would like to learn how to use their telescopes, and for a workshop in astrophotography.
Our mission, though, is more ambitious than just viewing or photographing celestial objects. We are looking to the future; to helping develop future generations of scientists, astronomers, astronauts and teachers of math and physics. The science of astronomy includes math, physics, biology and even botany (think about what kind of life might exist on another planet).
We see in our young people a natural love for space and the dreams of space travel to unknown worlds. If that curiosity is not encouraged and nurtured it is usually lost. The educational programs we are offering are designed to motivate these budding scientists. Our immediate plans call for:
- Continuing our popular after school astronomy programs;
- Partnering with science teachers to assist in astronomy classes;
- Establishing special programs tailored for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and their leaders;
- Star parties designed for beginners.
We hope that this year you will consider a generous donation to help us continue our programs as well as moving us forward toward constructing our next phase, the research-grade telescope. All donations are greatly appreciated.
This year, in addition to monetary donations, we have compiled a special "Wish List". If you would like a copy of this wish list please contact us and we will forward one to you. Of course all donations will be appropriately acknowledged and a tax receipt provided.
